Julia Biel’s Appearance at The 12th Penang Island Jazz Festival 2015 is Supported By The British Council
Self-taught singer and songwriter, pianist and guitarist with a sharp perspective on life and love, a voice as electrifying as it is hypnotic, and a fondness for pop song structures as much as for jazz harmony, Julia Biel, who has been tipped as ‘the best British vocalist to emerge in an age’ by THE INDEPENDENT, inhabits distinctive musical territory combining the raw emotional power of her old-school-jazz-sounding vocal with backdrops that include elements of 1960s psychedelia, electronica-imbued acoustics, driving electric guitars and epic, cinematic arrangements.
A former Perrier Jazz Vocalist of the Year winner, Julia’s credits also include a nomination in the ‘Rising Star’ category of the BBC Jazz Awards, a MOBO nomination and an Urban Music Award nomination. She released her debut album “Not Alone” in 2005 followed by her second album “Love Letters and Other Missiles” in 2015. Julia is joined by Edward Hick on drums and Ben Hazleton on bass.
